Designers web guide
Graphic designers web guide
Dimentians requirements and guide for graphic designers creating website designs.

When creating a design for a website there a few things to keep in mind:

  1. All documents (Photoshop and Illustrator) must be created in RGB format.

  2. Use only RGB colour palette and swatches, NO pantone or CMYK colours.

  3. Design using pixel measurements NOT inches. If using Photoshop, set to 72 dpi.

  4. The ‘fold’ is the line where any information below the browsers bottom edge will require the user to scroll to view. All important information and navigation elements should always be above the fold.

  5. Size of the design should always be created in the clients requested resolution. The design is always smaller than the actual browser size to take into account the scroll bars and browser menus. Also this height considers where the 'fold' line starts. Please provide us the design in the proper "Design size" (in pixels):

Browser size Design size Template (Illustrator CS)
    800x600 775x420 download file
    1024x768 990x590 download file

  6. Font sizes in graphics/images should not be smaller than 8pt to be legible, keep in mind this varies with each font.

  7. If you are concerned about legibility, font sizes for html should not be smaller than 10pt. Only common (web safe) fonts such as: Arial, Times New Roman, and Verdana should be used for HTML text.

  8. Each individual piece of the design (e.g. buttons, roll-over states) should be saved as separate layers in the file.

  9. All layers of a design file should be labeled and objects grouped.

  10. All graphics for flash should be provided as an Illustrator file, and any objects that can be vector should be provided as vector. *Unless the object is complicated with gradients and masks. These effects do not transfer properly into flash.

  11. Any animation graphics should be in vector format with movable parts on separate layers and labeled (this applies for graphics provided in both Flash and Illustrator).
